A sleeve that joins two reinforcing bars end to end so the joint carries the full bar, instead of overlapping them and relying on the concrete around the lap to pass the force between them.
A lap doubles the steel at exactly the busiest point of a column, and the lap length is bar bought, cut, bent and tied purely to be overlapped. A coupler removes that steel from the order, keeps the cage open enough to place and vibrate concrete, and develops the bar at the joint.
No. The bar end is cold forged to enlarge its core diameter before the thread is cut, so the thread goes into added material rather than into the parent bar. The splice is not a reduced section, which is why the joint develops the bar rather than governing it.
None. There is no hot work on site, no welder qualification to hold, and no heat-affected zone to argue about at inspection.
Parallel-threaded couplers run from 12 to 40 mm. Bolted MBT couplers run from 10 to 32 mm. Thread protection caps are made in 12, 16, 20, 25 and 32 mm.
Use an MBT coupler. It grips the bar with a row of high-strength bolts instead of a thread, so neither bar has to be rotated or prepared — which is what suits long, bent or already-fixed bars, repair and retrofit work, and joints where there is no room to turn a sleeve.
No. Both bars are threaded the same way and the sleeve is turned on until it seats, so there is nothing to calibrate and nothing to read off a gauge on site.
The bolt heads shear off once the required torque is reached, so a completed splice is visibly different from an incomplete one. Final inspection is a check that every bolt head has sheared and that both bars are inserted to the required depth.
Between the works and the splice a projecting bar end takes knocks from plant, gets walked on, and sits open to dust and rain for as long as the programme leaves it there. A bruised or rusted thread is a splice that has to be cut off and redone. The caps are colour-coded by size, so the right cap is obvious on a busy deck and a wrong one is obvious too.
The splicing system is manufactured to Eurocode 2 and ASME Section III, Division 2. Every size from 12 to 40 mm is rated for Type 2 seismic performance.
Yes. Tensile test reports, reverse cyclic loading assessments and conformity statements are published on the certificates page. Every coupler is individually marked for traceability, so a certificate can be retrieved against a specific batch if you quote the marking.
Each finished bar end is checked in tension before it leaves the works. The load is held inside the elastic range, so the test proves the thread without spending the bar — the end that is tested is the end that ships.
